David’s Weekly Update – 10 fabulous inns for alfresco drinking and dining

The sun continues to shine and lazy summer days lay ahead, so check out these recommendations for long alfresco lunches or evening suppers in gorgeous gardens or on suntrap terraces. There are many more to choose from at Inn Placesbut below you’ll find some amazing alfresco dining spaces and the best barbecue food from summer shacks, pizzas from wood-fired ovens, and delicious roasts from Green Egg barbecues.
Everyone’s perfect country inn – chill out in the pub’s gorgeous summer garden, where hammocks, rugs and shady trees await, and the wood-fired oven and charcoal BBQ fires up on Friday evenings and all day Saturday.
The Olive Branch, Clipsham, Rutland

A legend in its own lunchtime, the Olive Branch is the best A1 pit stop for miles around. The garden out front is a sun-trap in summer, with neat patio tables under the plant-festooned pergola – tuck into tapas on the terrace on warm summer evenings and make the most of the colourful cottage garden.

The White Horse, Brancaster, Norfolk

A slick seaside inn with stunning saltmarsh views where the sun deck behind the inn is perfect for sunset-spotting, and commands views that vault all the way to Scolt Head Island and the sea. There is a very dapper landscaped terrace out front too.

The Shibden Mill Inn, Shibden, West Yorkshire

A renovated 17th-century corn mill hidden in the folds of the wooded Shibden Valley, overlooking the babbling Red Beck – the streamside terrace, floodlit and heated at night, is the place to be on sunny summer days; arrive early at weekends and order seafood, salads and burgers from the Shibden Shack, a cool little outside kitchen.

The Pheasant Inn, Higher Burwardsley, Cheshire

Hidden down country lanes and tucked into the hillside high in the Peckforton Hills, the Pheasant draws the crowds for the far-reaching views across the Cheshire Plain to the Welsh mountains, best enjoyed from the fabulous tiered patio with a pint of local Weetwood ale in hand.

Perched on the rocks right beside the sea in beautiful Babbacombe, the Cary Arms is a soul-soothing hideaway.  The large terrace overlooking the sea is fabulous in the summer months (but not out of bounds in winter thanks to a real fire) and is a magnet for those wanting to make the most of those fabulous coastal views.

Griffin Inn, Fletching, East Sussex 

The garden is the jewel in The Griffin’s crown. The grassy green space out back looks out over glorious Sussex countryside (part of Sheffield Park as it happens) – don’t miss the memorable barbeques & jazz on the lawn on summer Sundays or ‘The Sheffield’ a rustic wooden bar which opens up in fair weather.

Lord Crewe Arms, Blanchland, Northumberland

Beautifully restored, this ancient inn stands in a timeless village with views down the Derwent Valley.  Eat alfresco in the original Abbey cloister garden, tucking into delicious roasts cooked in the Green Egg oven. There’s room on the grass for summer brollies, tables and chairs, plus boules, croquet and a giant Jenga game.

The Wheatsheaf Inn, Combe Hay, Somerset
