Overview

The White Hart Ampthill, Bedfordshire, MK45 2NG

The personal touch

This grand old coaching inn in the centre of Ampthill has been being lovingly restored by Oakman Inns and attracts a loyal local crowd. Time rolls back at your inside, with original herringbone brick walls, open beams and a huge ancient fireplace, replete with mural from 1646, which with the crackling fire beneath and some fireside chairs is the place to sit and sup a pint of London Pride. From the open kitchen hatch wafts delicious aromas from a menu that can be enjoyed in any corner of the pub – the blue tiled bar or the cosy pizzeria or restaurant at the back. In summer this elegant galleried space with leaded windows is glorious, opening out to a balcony for dining. Down below in the courtyard the old stables have been converted into private dining for larger parties, whilst nearby comfy seating is perfect for balmy summer evenings outside. For those staying, the luxurious bedrooms are stylish and restful retreats to explore the pretty Georgian market town of Ampthill and countryside beyond.

Sticky fingers

With two family rooms, children are welcome and the menu offers small, fresh and seasonal portions for little people.

Muddy paws

Pooches are welcome in the bar and upstairs in one room.

Alfresco

For eating alfresco, there’s a lovely restaurant balcony in summer, and in the courtyard you’ll find comfy chairs on decking – the perfect spot to while away a summer day.

Do not disturb

Tucked away upstairs amongst original beams, open brickwork and sloping floors, eight bedrooms ooze history and calm. Away from the babble of the main bar downstairs guests can enjoy cosy, stylish rooms with modern touches, muted colours, neutral wall papers and crisp white linen, set off with touches of bright colour in velvet cushions, chairs, curtains and woollen throws. Look out too for the ‘stag’ themes, which pop up throughout in art and ornaments. Every room also has a hairdryer, mini-bar, smart HD TV, GHD hair straighteners, a Bluetooth Roberts Radio and free superfast WiFi. The neutral bathrooms are a treat with sparkling power showers, deep tubs, Noble Isle smellies and fluffy bathrobes and towels. There’s also an array of teas and a Nespresso machine, and if your bolthole proves too hard to leave, room service is on hand from wonderful, friendly staff.

Mastering the menu

(Starters: £4.00-£9; Main Courses: £12.50-£26; Desserts £6.50-£8).

In true Oakman style, it’s not just regular cask ales such as Well’s Bombardier, craft beers and an extensive cocktail list that draws the thirsty, but the Mediterranean-inspired menu too. In the cosy main bar, pizzeria or elegant restaurant overlooking the courtyard, you can tuck into an imaginative, fresh, seasonal menu to suit all tastes, along with Neapolitan treats from the pizza oven. On the main menu, starters such as yoghurt, lemon & chilli marinated calamari come deep fried with chipotle mayonnaise, perhaps accompanied by a crisp Veritiere Pinot Grigio, or British pork belly slow-roasted in cider, finished in the Josper oven, with mashed potato, apple puree, crackling and gravy, washed down by a smooth La Mascota Malbec. For vegetarians and vegans, a good selection of dishes includes Portobello mushroom cottage pie with broccoli, peas and vegan Gary cheese. If you’ve room for more, try a wonderful British cheese plate of Barbers PDO cheddar and Somerset brie. For the sweeter tooth, passion fruit & lemon curd meringue mess with Sicilian lemon sorbet and a glass of The Noble Wrinkled Riesling pudding wine is a winner!
