The Devonshire Arms at Beeley Beeley, Derbyshire, DE4 2NR

Arrive down a road that winds across the Chatsworth Estate delivering glorious views, tantalising glimpses of the great house and one hell of a humpback bridge – a perfect backdrop for a walk. The ancient, estate-owned inn is a great place to stay, a bold renovation allowing thick stone walls, open fires, stone floors, oak beams and lots of dark wood to create a timeless feel, while in an interesting juxtaposition of styles, the sleek, glass fronted brasserie extension with its bright colours and contemporary furniture, is firmly in the 21st century. All 18 bedrooms are exemplary, suitably stylish with the Duchess of Devonshire’s trademark love of rich fabrics, bold colours and botanical watercolours by the Duke’s sister, Lady Emma Tennant. Rooms are split between the inn (four), Brookside House (four) a stone’s throw away along the garden park, quaint Dove Cottage (six) opposite, and 1 Devonshire Square in the village, which houses the four newest rooms. Big, comfortable beds, DAB radios, fresh coffee, fridges, dressing gowns, top bathrooms, and peace and quiet are common to all. There’s a welcome informality to eating here, where you eat in the bar for the buzz or in the brasserie for a calmer experience.
