Pilsley’s unassuming 18th-century inn was the second Chatsworth estate-owned pub to be refurbished by the Duchess of Devonshire, the other being the Devonshire Arms in nearly Beeley (see entry). Located a short walk from Chatsworth’s Farm Shop, the pub was spruced up in a contemporary style with a clutch smart rooms a few years back but, thankfully, it remains the village local and a favourite pit-stop with the local walking fraternity, as well as visitors to the famous big house and gardens down the lane. The bar and adjoining dining areas combine traditional wood and rustic stone with smart upholstered wall benches, leather chairs, quirky antler wallpaper and modern artwork. There are several log fires for toasting your toes with a pint of Peak Ales Chatsworth Gold in hand following a brisk walk across the estate. Using local produce, much of it sourced from the farms on the Chatsworth Estate, including meat and game, the menu evolves with the seasons and focuses on pubs classics with a twist – game terrine with house pickles, steak and kidney pie, honey and mustard ham with duck egg and hand-cut chips, lamb rump with dauphinois potatoes, braised red cabbage and red wine jus, and mixed berry Eton mess. The Duchess’s eye for colour, style and detail can also be found in the 13 country-house style bedrooms, which are split between the inn and a nearby farmhouse, the latter featuring four gorgeous four-poster rooms. Big beds topped with duck feather and down, rich fabrics, fresh coffee and spotless tiled bathrooms ensure a comfortable stay.
