Local boy Charles Brierley enjoyed his first beer at this typical blackened-stone, 18th-century Lancashire pub, set in the dinky hamlet of Lydgate on the lip of stunningly beautiful Saddleworth Moor high above Oldham. Charles must have liked it (the pub, that is, as well as the beer), because – moving on a few years to 1994 at a tender age of 25 – he returned and bought the place. It was then in a serious state of decay but within a year he turned the White Hart into a smart and comfortable hostelry and it continues to thrive 25 years on as a classy inn and wedding venue offering great food, smartly updated rooms and fabulous moorland views. No ordinary inn this, but one with vastly appealing warmth and cool, stylish attitude, thanks to Charles’s hands-on approach and desire to keep the inn among Britain’s best. You can lock yourself round a pint of excellent Timothy Taylors’ Golden Best by a welcoming fire and a chat to friendly locals or retire to the cosy snug as it’s still very much a pub. However, there are plenty of exciting dining options and innovative menus from talented head chef Mike Shaw, who has an impressive CV. Tuck into pub classics in the bar or adjoining brasserie or head for the elegant dining room to sample Mike’s five or seven course tasting menus. The 16 super-comfortable rooms are split between the inn and a cottage just up the road.
