Overview

The Pilot Greenwich, London, SE10 0BE

The personal touch

The Pilot stands in the shadow of the O2 Arena and is where the Regency era meets the new millennia! The pirates, vagabonds and smugglers have gone, but locals and visitors still flock by boat, cable car, tube and train to this little watering hole which sits quietly as a reminder of the area’s nautical heritage. 300 years on, the faithful have replaced their tots of rum with pints of Fuller’s London Pride and Oliver’s Island, quaffed in the small mustard coloured snug or at the main bar, which now with teal tongue and groove walls and portholes showing footage of choppy seas, calls for drinkers with good sea legs! Naval rations are long gone too, the nearby open-plan kitchen serving up fresh, seasonal dishes that can be tucked into anywhere, including the fun restaurant at the bottom of the ‘Norty Steps’, which opens out to a pretty summer patio. Upstairs a little drinking corner looks down on the main bar and can be used as a private dining room with its own decked terrace – a tempting roof-top perch for guests to shout land ahoy to the nearby O2 arena! But it’s the bedrooms, large and small, with travel themes, nautical touches, crisp linen and shiny bathrooms that make this little gem of a pub extra special. If you book one of the stylish, cosy Captain’s cabins with porthole shutters, decorated with a sea views – who knows where you’ll have sailed to by morning!

Sticky fingers

Little people are welcome with their own fresh, seasonal menu. On request, spare beds or cots are available for the larger rooms.

Muddy paws

Pooches are welcome in the bar but not upstairs in the bedrooms.

Alfresco

For eating alfresco, there’s a lovely outside terrace, which extends from the restaurant in summer, plus there are picnic tables for drinkers at the front of the pub. Upstairs the decked roof terrace is perfect for private parties.

Do not disturb

The bedrooms, or should we call them cabins, have recently been refurbished by the Fuller’s team, and they ooze nautical charm and local history, with touches of humour and style – clocks on the doors tell the room numbers, not the time (in respect of Greenwich Meantime!). The smallest Captain’s cabins, where guests can cosy up in their own luxurious bunks with porthole shutters glazed with ocean views, are an imaginative nod to the sailors who once propped up the bar downstairs. In larger rooms, with brass beds and quirky reclaimed furniture, such as wooden tables made of old workbenches, barrel bedside tables and glass lamps, the seafaring and travel themes continue. Retro camper van wallpaper brings back childhood holidays, whilst other rooms with exotic bird prints hint of faraway shores. All bedrooms, large and small, have Egyptian cotton linen, good quality teas, Nespresso coffee, Wi-Fi and sparkling bathrooms with fluffy towels and Cole & Lewis smellies. If you pick a room at the top, the crows-nest views of the O2 dome and cable car lit up at night, are magic.

Mastering the menu

(Starters: £5.50-£8.50, Main Courses: £11-£26.50; Desserts £6-7.50).

It’s always a treat to prop up the bar at this Fuller’s watering hole awash with their own ales – London Pride, ESB and Oliver’s Island. So too is The Pilot’s fresh and seasonal menu. Tapas boards invite guests to ‘share with love’, but why not start in this nautical bolt hole with fish – salt & pepper squid, smoked paprika aioli topped off with a zingy glass of Picpoul de Pinet, Domaine Delso. Meats from Fuller’s selected family farms turn pub classics into something very delicious, such as slow-cooked pork belly, cannellini bean and Mrs Owton’s bacon casserole with cider sauce accompanied by a glass of smooth Cruz Alta Malbec Reserve. There are also good vegetarian options packed with flavour such as roasted beetroot & squash salad with tarragon pesto, feta, lentils & toasted pumpkin seeds. If you have time for a pudding before heading into town on the Thames Clipper or going to a gig nearby at the O2 arena, then orange polenta cake with natural yoghurt and orange and vanilla syrup is a sticky treat that will see you through.
