Overview

The Joiners Arms Alnwick, Northumberland, NE66 3EA

The personal touch

Just a brisk stroll from one of Northumberland’s finest beaches at Low Newton-by-the-Sea, a short drive from several stunning coastal castles, and famous Alnwick Castle and Garden is only 15 minutes away, this modest, unassuming pub takes some beating as a weekend base for walking and unwinding and exploring the county’s wild coastline. Looks can be deceiving, however, so step inside and expect to be wowed by the bold, bohemian-style interior – it’s not your typical country inn. The atmospheric, candle-lit bar features timbered and exposed stone walls, flagstone or wood floors, low beamed ceilings, roaring log fires, and an eclectic collection of old tables, mismatched chairs and suede banquettes. Equally quirky are the potted plants that festoon the bar and the splashes of eye-catching colour, from floral lampshades to crimson velvet fabrics. The plank-panelled dining room extension leads through to the rear terrace.

Sticky fingers

Kids are allowed throughout the pub; they have their own menu and crayons and paper are available to keep younger guests entertained. There’s space for extra beds in the larger rooms (£30).

Muddy paws

Your canine chum is most welcome in the bar where there are ‘treats’ available and they can stay over with you in two dog-friendly rooms (£10). Stunning beach walks on the doorstep.

Alfresco

Spacious rear terrace for summer sipping and eating.

Do not disturb

If you love the bold and quirky décor in the bar, then you’ll relish staying in any of the five individually themed upstairs bedrooms. Funky, almost boudoir-style, they ooze character and are certainly bold is design and décor – expect to find antler chandeliers, frilly bedside lampshades, lavish fabrics, deep-pile carpets, lacquered furnishings, comfortable, low-slung French beds, deep blue walls in one rooms, tartan fabrics in another, while the three rear rooms have double-ended baths on plinths in the room, as well as Juliet balconies with panoramic rural views – best to book one of these for peace and quiet. All rooms have ‘cocktail kits’ and special oils and rose petals can be arranged for relaxing in the bath while watching the sunset. Good bathrooms have walk-in showers, fluffy bathrobes and Caroline Henry toiletries. Contemporary styling and lighting add to the wow factor and housekeeping is immaculate. Rooms are popular with guests attending weddings at nearby Newton Hall, which has also been grandly renovated and under the same ownership.

Mastering the menu

(Starters: £4.95-£7.95; Main Courses: £10.95-£25; Desserts £5.95)

There’s something for everyone on the crowd-pleasing all-day menu. Expect simple, honest cooking – good pub food served in generous portions and prepared using the best local ingredients available. For lunch, share a rosemary and garlic-infused baked camembert with red onion chutney and soldiers, tuck into stottie (soft rolls made by Trotter’s in nearby Seahouses) filled with beer battered fish fingers, watercress and pea puree. Linger longer and kick off a good meal with mussels cooked in white wine, garlic and cream or try a seasonal special Italian Burrata – heirloom tomatoes with creamy Burrata, wild rocket, basil and fresh pesto dressing. Main dishes range from venison cassoulet and confit duck to lamb rump with Provencal vegetables, fish and chips, and rib-eye steak with proper chips and peppercorn sauce. Leave room for homemade sticky toffee pudding. On Sunday’s enjoy roast Northumbrian topside of beef with all the trimmings. Cask beers are also very local, including Alnwick Brewery St Mary’s ale and Mordue ales brewed in Newcastle. Gin-lovers have 23 gins to choose from – why not try Lindisfarne Gin with local Marlish tonic water. Minerals and soft drinks are also local, supplied by Fentimans of Hexham. The Corney & Barrow list of wines includes 10 by the glass.
