Dunwich was at one time a medieval port of some size and importance then the original village was virtually destroyed by a terrible storm in 1326. Further storms and erosion followed and now the place is little more than a hamlet beside a shingle beach. Two minutes stroll from the beach, the Ship is a well-loved old smugglers’ inn overlooking the salt marshes and sea and is popular with walkers and birdwatchers visiting the nearby RSPB Minsmere reserve. The main bar remains delightfully unspoilt and has a wood-burning stove in a huge fireplace, flagged floors, simple wooden furnishings and nautical artefacts – it’s a great place for hunkering down with a pint of Adnams on wild winter days. Sympathetically refurbished in recent years, with the addition of clean, comfortable and contemporary-styled bedrooms, it is locally renowned for its timeless atmosphere and fish and chips. The Chestnut Group, who also own the nearby Westleton Crown, took over the pub in late 2018 and are gently sprucing up the old pub and injecting some style and warmth into the bedrooms.
