There’s a timeless feel to this attractive 16th-century thatched inn, which is set in rolling Wiltshire countryside. It’s remote but locating it via tortuously narrow lanes off the A30 is fun but once here you won’t want to leave, as it really is the quintessential country pub; there’s even an old cobbled path leading to a low latch door. Duck on entering and find a charmingly unspoilt bar, which has a low-beamed ceiling, partly flagstoned floor and an assortment of traditional furniture arranged in secluded alcoves. Various farm tools and tackle from times past cover the walls and you can toast your toes by a blazing wood-burning fire in winter. Food is simple, hearty and big on flavour, the short printed menu evolves with the seasons and champions produce from local farmers and artisan producers. Step outside and climb the covered stair to reach the four cottagey bedrooms, one tucked beneath the heavy thatch with a big wooden bed, head cracking low beams – watch your head! All have recently been spruced up in a fresh, simple and contemporary style. Owner Ben Maschler also owns the sweet little cottage next door, so why not rent Plum Cottage and really explore the beautiful Nadder Valley.
