Lost down single-track lanes in a picturesque village at the head of the beautiful Ceiriog Valley, with hills rising all around, this former 16th-century farmhouse and drovers’ inn is a rural treasure, oozing traditional charm and with welcoming, hands-on owners, it makes the perfect bolthole for active country lovers. You can walk the Berwyns for hours, explore wild trails by bike or on horseback, spend time fishing and shooting, or just enjoy the peace and quiet of this isolated valley. Old beams abound, the black range glows in reception, antiques fill the lounge, and a wood fire crackles in the traditional bar, where you can toast your toes and sup a pint of Weetwood ale after an invigorating walk. Grant Mulholland’s delicious food draws an appreciative crowd, so bag a table by the fire and tuck into a hearty plate of treacle braised beef cheek with mustard mash, or Welsh lamb rump with cauliflower cheese puree, lamb baji, grilled figs and red wine and redcurrant jus. Leave room for sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce. Retire to one of the 13 comfortable and individually designed bedrooms or suites for a great night’s sleep; all have been refurbished in contemporary style and three are dog friendly.
