There’s Much to Celebrate in 2018!

8 January 2018

There is much to celebrate about the great British pub as we move into 2018. The continuing trend towards Staycations with holidaymakers taking an increasing number of short breaks rather than the traditional extended summer holiday will result in more and more pubs transforming upstairs spaces or tired, old-fashioned guest rooms into ‘affordable luxury havens’.  They will be splashing out on the best beds, quality linen, luxurious bathrooms and injecting a vibrant often quirky design and décor to create that all important ‘wow’ factor to tempt you to stay.

Where pubs have garden spaces (& views) expect to find beautifully furnished yurts, swish log cabins or cosy shepherd’s huts as they embrace the glamping trend to offer a quirky, alternative place to stay.
Cosy country and town pubs with open fires and a warm atmosphere are also perfect for experiencing the effect of Hygge, a Danish word implying ‘a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being’, and you’ll find many actively promoting this heart-warming lesson from Scandinavia.

Food and drink provenance and sourcing produce locally from farms and artisan suppliers will continue to grow, with more local beers on tap and an imaginative soft drinks choice. Expect also to find pubs offering a full-blown afternoon tea experience as they continue to evolve their offering throughout the day, in addition to supper clubs and themed dining experiences.

Pubs will also become popular venues for business meetings and weddings with couples shunning expensive country-house hotels in favour of more informal and intimate places to enjoy their big day with family and friends. Equally, in these pubs with space to entertain, be it in the garden or a private room, watch out for cool little festivals popping up at weekends to celebrate craft beer and cider, street food, local food producers, music and even Christmas markets.
